High-energy ball milling (HEBM) of powders is a complex process involving mixing, morphology changes, generation and evolution defects the crystalline lattice, formation new phases. This review dedicated to memory our colleague, Prof. Michail A. Korchagin (1946–2021), aims highlight his works on synthesis materials by self-propagating high-temperature (SHS) thermal explosion (TE) in HEBM mixtures as important contributions development powder technology. We results obtained group, including those collaboration with other researchers. show applicability for products fabrication bulk coatings. influences parameters well structure, phase composition, distribution (in composites), grain size products. The microstructural features conducted using precursors are dramatically different from formed non-milled mixtures. also suitable feedstock depositing coatings spraying. emerging applications future research directions this area discussed.
